FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Though summer might have been perceived as less-than-stellar, this fall won’t actually be as chilly as many are expecting.

Meteorologist Erin Wenckstern with The Weather Network says that according to their seasonal forecast for autumn 2016, the Peace Region is expected to have above-normal temperatures on average, although she added that temperatures could also fluctuate across a fairly wide range.

“Even at the beginning of September, we had daytime highs that were in the low teens, high single digits for some of the area. Fort St. John got up to eight degrees at the beginning of September. And then we’re up to the twenties again, so it’s that kind of back-and-forth pattern we’re going to be seeing,” explained Wenckstern.

She added that though several months ago forecasters had seen that the beginning signs of a La Niña weather pattern were emerging, meteorologists believe that the La Niña counterpart to the strong El Niño over the past two years hasn’t occurred.

“It looks like right now, the best-case scenario for us is that we weould be in a weak La Niña phase, it looks more neutral. While we experiences such a strong El Niño over the past winter and fall, it’s a very different setup this year. We’re expecting the Pacific to not play as big of a role as it has in the past few years.”

Wenckstern says that though there won’t be either a strong El Niño or La Niña, an area of warm water off the BC Coast in the northeastern Pacific will mean that coastal areas of the province will see a wetter than normal autumn, while the BC Peace is forecast to see precipitation levels that are near average or only slightly above.
