FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – City Hall has released the Fort St. John August Building Numbers report, and while it contains a surprise, it is not as the result of what’s in it, but rather what’s not.

Recall we had confirmation from the North Peace Savings and Credit Union, that the permit was issued early last month for its new building on 100th street, on the site of the now demolished and once shared St. Martin’s Anglican and St. Luke’s United Church building.

However, it is not included among the August report’s list of 21 permits issued, and the absence of what is estimated as about a 15 million dollar three story structure, has left the August value of construction in the city, at only $7.1 million.

That’s just slightly more than a third of the $20.6 million last August, and as a result the year-to-date total this year has fallen even further off the pace set last year.

Through the first eight months of 2016, the city has issued 95 permits with a total value of $58.1 million, but for the same period in 2015, it issued 210 permits, valued at $126.3 million.

In fact, this year’s total through August is the lowest for that period since 2012, when it was only $46.8 million, and it is also the first total for the first eight months of the year, below $100 million in the last three years.

Of the 21 permits issued last month only two were worth more than $1 million, both for commercial buildings, one at 9203 – 100th street, valued at $2.3 million, and the other at 9536 – 111th street, worth just over $1.5 million.

As for city revenue, the 21 permits, added just under $50,000 to that total, making it just over 306,000 for the year.

That too however, is less than 50% of last year’s post for the same time period, which was just over 632,000.

As for the Credit Union permit, we have yet to connect with City Hall for clarification, but it’s possible we made a mistake in assuming it would be included in the August report, given the project has been put on indefinite hold.
