FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A Fort St. John woman was celebrated today for her 30 years of service and excellence to the Red Cross.
Judy Hawthorne has been helping with the Red Cross since 1985. She has been the volunteer lead for the Health Equipment Loan Program in Fort St. John, just behind the Fort St. John Pharmacy and Wellness Centre.
Today, Judy was presented with the Order of The Red Cross, which is the highest honour one can receive. There were only 2 people in BC receiving the award this year.
Judy has dedicated her time and helped over 9,000 people in the north region borrow 14,000 pieces of medical equipment, which she would then clean and sterilize herself.
She says it is such an honour for her to be able help those who truly need it.
“It’s such an honour. Helping others return to their daily life at home after surgery or injury is always special and so important for people in our community.”
Judy gives around 400 hours of her time each year to the Red Cross. She goes above and beyond to do things, even if it is a task that isn’t always hers, she always puts others before herself.
She has also received many other awards, such as: 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 15 year, 20 year, service awards, right up to the 30 year service award.
There is quite a process to go through to get this award. There are nomination forms, letters of support that need to be filled out and then others have to decide if they are worthy of receiving this award.
Judy is a profound member of the Fort St. John community and she isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
