FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – It was a weekend of non-stop slo-pitch action at the Taylor ball diamonds – literally.
The 10th Annual Allen LaFleur Tournament of Hope was a roaring success this past weekend. Roughly 500 players on a record 40 teams participated in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament began at 7:00 on Friday evening, and ran through the overnight hours until the final three games’ opening pitches at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Though a thunderstorm passed over Taylor on Satuday evening before a low pressure system brought more rain through Sunday afternoon, that didn’t dampen the spirits of everyone that came out to play.
Sunday’s final games saw Balls Deep take the win over The Plugs in the ‘A’ Division with a 7-6 final score. The Great Canadian Oil Change lost their final against Mixed Nuts 7-5 in Division ‘B,’ while Div. ‘C’ was won by Logix Controls over Krush 11-3. Kokanee and True Grit played each other in the Division D final, another close game that ended 16-15 in favour of Kokanee. Knappett doubled up the Mustangs 8-4 to win the ‘E’ Division.
Tournament organizer Velma Alexander says that the final tally of funds raised for Raymond Auger and Karsten Mayinger, who are battling cancer, is not yet known, although organizers hoped to at least equal last year’s total of nearly $17,000. Alexander says that the final amount should be tallied up later this week.
