PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Northern Health announced this afternoon that it has hired six new doctors through the province’s Practice Ready Assessment-BC program.

The health authority says that Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, and Dawson Creek will be receiving one doctor each, while three will be moving to Quesnel.

This is the third group of physicians who have committed to working in the North after completing the program, which includes a rigorous assessment process, and three months spent with a B.C. physician who evaluates their skills as they care for patients.

Those doctors that have successfully completed the program commit to practice for at least three years in a designated rural community in need. The three doctors that have been hired in Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, and Tumbler Ridge will begin practicing in September, while the three new physicians in Quesnel will start practicing later this month.

The PRA-BC was launched in collaboration with both the Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC, formerly known as the BC Medical Association, who recognized the need to strengthen health care in rural and remote areas and improve access to family physicians. The program began as a pilot project in April 2015 and since then has been funded for a total of $7.6 million.
