FORT ST. JOHN, B.C.  – Though the rain did cut into racing on Saturday, Northern Lights Raceway played host to a successful first race of the 2016 season on Sunday.

The drag strip unofficially began their 2016 season on Friday afternoon at 5:00 with street-legal drag racing that was open to the public. Though rain was threatening, it never materialized. Mark Brush with the Speedway says that turnout from the public was good, and that the event was far more successful than last year’s opener, which was shortened due to rain.

Rain on Saturday meant that the ¼ mile was closed for the day, but Northern Lights was able to reopen, and saw 58 racers competing on Sunday.

In the Box Class, Elton Hagen took first place, while Merv Kowalski ended up in 2nd. The No Box Class was won by Steve Brietkreuz, though not far behind him was Amber Rutherford. The Pure Street Event was taken by Jordan Mayes, followed by Jason Gertz.

Dave Marsh came in first place in the Bike Sled Class, Richard Rollinson took second place.

The Top 3 racers in the Junior Class were: Noah MacDonald, Isabella Sasyn, and Grant Gessner.
