FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Emergency Management BC is launching an earthquake alert tomorrow morning as part of Exercise Coastal Response.
This will be B.C’s first ever full-scale earthquake simulator. The notification will be sent out shortly after a 7:45 am commencement of the exercise.
The alert will say that a fictional earthquake has occurred and a Tsunami warning is in effect for parts of coastal Vancouver Island. The alert will be sent to coastal emergency managers and partner agencies as well as local authorities and First Nations on Vancouver Island.
The response is based on a 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurring off the shore of Southwestern B.C.
The exercise is a mixture of real-time activities and simulated activities involving emergency operations, logistics, medical care, mass care, and public information.
