FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the BC Peace River and Fort Nelson regions this morning.
Environment Canada says that the storms could develop over the South Peace this morning, and are forecast to travel towards the North Peace by this afternoon. As of 5:00 AM local time, Environment Canada’s Vaisala lightning detection system was registering a number of lightning strikes south of Chetwynd.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for:
B.C. Peace River, B.C. (087300)
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
Severe thunderstorms can develop early this morning over southern BC Peace region then move onto northern BC Peace late this morning. Severe thunderstorms can be expected over Fort Nelson region this afternoon into early this evening.
Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
