FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – As the first anniversary approaches of last summer’s start of Site-C dam phase 1 construction work, there are those who argue, it has now advanced far enough to put to rest any serious thoughts of stopping the project, even though it is not scheduled to be completed until 2024.

Arguing it has a mandate to meet the long-term electricity needs of its customers; BC Hydro has billed Site-C as a provincial source of clean, renewable and cost effective electricity for more than 100 years.

However, that description is vastly different than the one put forward by the project opponents like Ken Boone. The President of the Peace Valley Landowner Association says any thoughts of throwing in the opposition towel to the third dam on the Peace are a long ways down the road.

He agrees with those who argue resolution of the Site-C dam construction dispute may come down to Federal Government permit decisions.

Mr. Boone has confirmed there are still four outstanding Landowner and First Nations cases and/or decisions in federal and BC courts that go to Site-C construction challenges. He says those are in addition to what is expected to be a protracted Blueberry First Nation civil case.

In addition to that, there’s the lingering BC Hydro civil suit against a half dozen dam site protesters, which was followed by a Hydro application and court granted injunction, earlier this year, which led to the dismantling of the protest camp.

The six protesters include Ken and his wife Arlene. They’ve had discussions with Hydro CEO and President, Jessica McDonald, but while Ken complimented her for trying to reach a negotiated settlement on the issue, he also rejected what she brought to the table.
