VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Province is increasing the minimum wage in two steps.

The first increase of 40 cents will bring it to $10.85 cents, which will go into effect on September 15, 2016.

Another increase going into effect a year later, on September 15, 2017, will see a jump of 30 cents to $11.25.

Premier Christy Clark had previously said the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index, but says strong economic growth in the province brought them to make changes.

She says the wage the hikes mean an extra $1,400 will be in the pockets of workers with full-time minimum wage jobs.

For servers handling liquor, the minimum wage will also increase at the same rate, to $9.60. The Province says the difference of $1.25 between the general minimum wage and liquor server rate will be maintained.

The B.C. government is also cutting the small business tax rate by 40 per cent by the years 2017 and 2018 – meaning a small business with $100,000 in active business income would have its taxes go from $2,500 to $1,500.

As well, the Province plans to invest $2.88 million in new training programs to help with labour shortages in B.C.
