FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — As the month of February – and Black History Month – start, the Pan African Caribbean Association of Fort St. John will be launching their month of festivities with a screening of Invictus tonight at the Lido Theatre.

The film is about Nelson Mandela’s efforts to unite South Africa following the end of Apartheid, as the nation hosts 1995 Rugby World Cup. The movie starts at 5:40 p.m; admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Following the film night, there will be a soccer derby at North Peace Secondary School on Wdnesday, Feb. 10 — which is also free to attend. On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Association will host their final free event — a Family Storytelling event at the Public Library.

Carl Jackson, treasurer of the Association, says this year is the first that there will be celebrations all throughout February for Black History Month.

“This is the first time we’re going to go the entire month,” he said. “What we normally do is one event at the end of the month.”

While it’s tough to say right now how many people will come out to the smaller events earlier in the month, Jackson says the final event always has a big turnout.

The big party on Feb. 27 starts at 5 p.m. at the Immaculata Hall. There will be a fashion show, a dinner of African and Caribbean cuisine, as well as live music performed by Alpha Yaya Diallo.

Tickets for the big event are $40 regularly priced, but are $20 for children ages 6 – 12. Until Feb. 6, the tickets will be listed at a cheaper early bird price of $35. They can be purchased on Eventbrite, or picked up at NEAT’s office.
