After a season that saw the Fort St. John Senior Flyers win the Coy Cup for the first time in their history, the team returned to the North Peace Arena on Monday night to start preparing for another year on the ice. The Flyers now have two training camp sessions under their belt, and have another two on tap before taking on the Fort Nelson Yeti for two exhibition games next weekend.

With every new season comes new faces, and some of those faces will be behind the bench. Andrew Leriger takes over as head coach from Gerard Dicaire after deciding not to return for a third year.

Leriger said with having some players skating and others not during the offseason, it’s important to go easy on them at first in the early stages of camp, with conditioning being the central focus.

“Most of the guys have been skating a couple of guys haven’t so I don’t want to hurt them right off the bat. I want to push them a little bit and get a good, full practice in and get their conditioning going. That’s the main thing.”

After joining the team in an assistant role towards the end of last year, Leriger said he didn’t want his stint with the club to be a short one.

“I quite enjoyed myself last year. I don’t want to be that guy that kind of comes in for a short period of time. I’ll put my time in and give these guys what they deserve as well and that’s a committed coach.”

The Flyers games against Fort Nelson next weekend are scheduled for October 17 and 18 at 8 p.m., and 1 p.m. respectively at the North Peace Arena.
