Three championships will be up for grabs on Friday night as Fivestar Fight League presents “Pride of the Peace” in Dawson Creek. The all amateur card is headlined by two main events as Travis Lussier of Fort St. John will battle Dillan Main for the amateur welterweight crown, and the amateur middleweight title will also be on the line as Brent Auger takes on Mikel DuPont of Fort St. John.
The middleweight championship was won by Lussier early in the year, but he has since vacated that title as welterweight has been his goal for MMA fighting according to Fivestar owner Justin Donally.
“Travis Lussier won our middleweight title in Yellowknife in June but he had never planned to stay at middleweight, he was working his way down to welterweight,” Donally said. “He won the title, made his drop to 170, went down to Vancouver and fought for Battlefield Fight League and won his debut at welterweight there,” he said.
The card will also consist of the first flyweight bout Fivestar has ever featured and with that a new amateur champion in the division will be crowned. Jarrett Vornbrock (3-0) will be stepping into the cage against Jesse Atwell of Edmonton.
“I’m the first one to tell you, I don’t usually get excited for the little guys,” Donally admitted. “I’m a bigger guy I’ve always liked that 185-205, those have always been my favourite divisions. As the sport evolves you’re seeing a lot more smaller guys. They’re super fast, technical and fun to watch. It’s just a different level of pace that people haven’t seen around here.”
“Pride of the Peace” will begin at the Dawson Creek Curling Club starting at 7 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 6.
