Cops for Cancer’s Tour De North team heads for Chetwynd

It’s not just Cops for Cancer – Fire Services admin, ambulance first-respondents, and even conservation officers are riding along police officers this year for the cause.

As of Wednesday, Tour de North has raised $173,692.

The trek started yesterday, out of Dawson Creek. Sarah Shaw works with the BC Ambulance Services within the community, and said she trained as much as she could in the hills of the Kootenays to be better prepared.

Shaw got involved with Cops for Cancer after meeting children at Camp Good Times, a camp for children with cancer and their relatives based in the Lower Mainland.

Shaw says her mother, who also survived breast cancer, has become one of her biggest supporters.

The bikers were cheered on as they arrived to their first stop on the trip – Canadian Tire in Fort St. John.

Today, they left to take off on what is supposed to be the hardest part of their journey – the stretch of road between Fort St. John and Chetwynd. The steep grade hills make it more difficult.

They are expected to roll in tonight at Remax Park, around 6:30 PM.

Other stops along the way include Powder King Mountain Resort on Thursday, Prince George on Saturday, and finally, Williams Lake on Monday.

The other teams are:

  • Tour de Coast, who are riding 900 km along the Sea to Sky Corridor, and in the Lower Mainland,
  • Tour de Valley, who are making the 800 km trek along the Fraser Valley to Tsawwassen and White Rock,
  • Tour de Rock, who are cycling 1000 km across Vancouver Island, from North to South.
