Well known Fort St. John resident Darlene Thomas has had a GoFundMe account created to help send her to Carnegie Hall to join the North Peace Community Choir. The account was created by city councillor Dan Davies after Thomas’ wheelchair needed substantial repairs that drained the savings she had for the trip.

Thomas is a triple amputee who saved a person’s life in 2012 by getting out of her chair to perform CPR to save his life. She was recognized for her contributions to the community back in June at the Hero’s Dinner.

Davies found out about the situation Thomas was in after seeing her at Wal-Mart in a different wheelchair. After asking what happened to her usual chair, Thomas told Davies her chair needed $3,000 in repairs.

“It was going to be upwards of $3,000 to be repaired,” Davies said. “She got quite emotional. She asked if I knew of any ways that I might be able to help. I know there’s a lot of great causes out there that use the GoFundMe page and this was the first thing that popped into my mind. What a great local cause for a local lady.”

The page has a fundraising goal of $5,000. So far over $1,500 has been raised in two days since the account was created. It’s hoped the goal can be reached by mid-September.

Davies added the chair is likely to need further repairs. Any money left over would be going towards fixing it.
