Wildfire shuts down portion of Alaska Highway

The Big Beaver Creek wildfire off Mile 250 of the Alaska Highway.

The Alaska Highway is closed between Prophet River and Fort Nelson as the Big Beaver Creek fire continues to spread.

Both the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and federal government issued the notice around 3 p.m.

The highway is closed to all traffic between the two towns.

The lightning-caused fire was first discovered on Sunday about 2.5 kilometres west of the highway.

It has since spread to about 300 hectares in size. Yesterday, fire officials said the blazed was remaining stable around 135 hectares, and was burning away from the highway. However, officials were bracing for unstable weather.

According to preliminary BC Wildfire Branch information, 52 firefighters along with an airtanker are battling the blaze.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Below is a map of the closure.
