The Dawson Creek has confirmed they were called to a disturbance at B.C. Hydro open house just before a man was shot outside the Fixx Urban Grill located in the Stonebridge Hotel.
According to the RCMP, at approximately 6:30 p.m., they responded to a complaint of a disturbance at the B.C. Hydro Site C Open House. Police were told that a male was allegedly damaging property and disrupting the public event. Once police arrived on scene, they encountered a masked individual outside the hotel, believed to be connected to the original complaint.
The RCMP say that despite officer attempts to de-escalate the situation, a confrontation between police and the individual occurred and the individual was shot. The male suspect was transported to the Dawson Creek Hospital, where he passed away from his injuries.
North District Major Crime has been deployed to the incident and secured the scene along with any physical evidence. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. will now take over the officer involved shooting investigation.
The team is expected to arrive Friday with resources that will include the Team Director, several Investigators and a Forensic Specialist. Additional resources will be available if required.
IIO investigators will be conducting standard investigative activities including locating and interviewing any witnesses and securing video from the area.
The IIO says they will not release any information about the RCMP officer who shot the suspect, nor will they release any information about the deceased.
