Monday evening at approximately 10 p.m., Grande Prairie RCMP observed an individual operating a motorcycle. The motorcycle did not have its headlight on, and after officers tried to get the rider’s attention he attempted to flee.
The individual stalled the bike as he attempted to get away. Officers then observed that it did not have a licence plate, and the ignition switch had been punched out.
After being told he was being detained by police for the investigation of a stolen motorcycle, the individual attempted to reach inside of his backpack, but was prevented from doing so. The male again attempted to flee, this time on foot but was apprehended after a short chase.
The rider managed to get away briefly but was apprehended for a second time after another chase. As the individual was being restrained he attempted to gain access to one of the officer’s taser. Police eventually tasered the suspect but it had no effect. The individual was finally restrained after additional officers arrived on scene.
Officers called for an ambulance after the rider started to display signs of medical distress. After an exam by doctors it was determined the individual was under the influence of variety of drugs and may have been suffering an overdose. He remains in hospital on guard.
Police searched the individuals backpack from the scene and discovered a sawed-off shotgun. RCMP is continuing to investigate the incident and charges are pending.
