Environment Canada has issued a warning for heavy rain expected throughout much of its Fort Nelson forecast region.

The weather agency expects the region will see up to 40 millimetres of rain in a prolonged downpour later this afternoon.

Environment Canada says while most of the rain will fall outside of Fort Nelson, the section of the Alaska Highway between Wonowon and south of Fort Nelson are expect to endure the downpour.

Forecasters are warning motorists along the highway to reduce visibility and pooling water on the road.

Motorists are advised to check DriveBC.ca or or call 1-800-550-4997 for highway conditions before travelling.
