Members of the local muslim community say they didn’t know the suspect arrested on Friday and charged with several terrorism charges.

The 33-year-old Othman Ayed Hamdan, a Fort St John resident faces three terrorism charges.

The RCMP allege Hamdan distributed propaganda connected with the group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Investigators allege the material posted online included inducement and instructions to commit murder in the name of Jihad.

The head of the local Muslim association says no one in his community knew the suspect.

Azhar Phoolwala says Hamdan was never seen at Fort St John’s mosque or any prayer meetings.

He says the arrest is as much a shock to local Muslims as it is to the rest of the community.

The date of Hamdan’s next court appearance hasn’t been released, but police say it will be soon.
