Man beaten, refuses to co-operate with police

Four masked men chased down and beat another man with a baseball bat in Pouce Coupe last week as part of an ongoing drug fight in the area, police say.

Dawson Creek RCMP report that assault took place Tues., June 9 in the village. Investigators have found that a 26-year-old man was being chased by four unknown men wearing masks, who, when they caught up to the fleeing man, beat him with a baseball bat.

The man, who is known to police, sustained a broken arm in the assault, but RCMP say he is refusing to cooperate with the investigation.

RCMP believe the assault is linked to an apparent drug conflict in Dawson Creek, and did not provide any further details.

Dawson Creek RCMP say they responded to 204 calls between June 7 and 13. Calls included seven thefts, three stolen vehicles, 22 driving complaints, 10 motor vehicle accidents, 10 false alarms and eight break and enters.

Meanwhile, the detachment is calling on the public for help in its investigation of a suspected arson in the 900 block of 91A Avenue in Dawson Creek in the early hours of June 12.

Investigators believe the fire was deliberately set with an accelerant that police says was “laid out from the porch of the residence to the middle of the property.”

RCMP say a 92-year-old woman had been the only person in the house, but was not aware of the fire until the following morning. Police say heavy rain on the day in question was able to douse the fire out before it could spread.

Police ask that anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area from midnight till 6 a.m. on June 12 to call 250-784-3700.
