School District 60 is advising parents to jump quickly on registering their children for the school bus next school year if they haven’t already done so.
At the School District 60 board meeting Monday night, district treasurer Doug Boyd said rural families have until June 19 to register their students and pay the new $100 fee directly at their schools.
If parents miss that cut off date, they can still register students and pay the fees at the district office until July 10.
“We’re sending out a reminder, we don’t want to lose anybody,” said Boyd.
After July 10, the district will be establish its bus routes for next year based on registrations, Boyd said.
Parents who register their kids beyond those dates will still be accommodated, but they will be at the whim of the established routes, and may have to drive their children to the nearest bus stop, Boyd warned.
Earlier this year, the district moved forward with partial bus registration fees next year for rural families. The fees do not apply for those who live in the city.
The district has been grappling with covering student transportation costs following provincial funding cuts made years ago.
