Bad weather forces players off pitch at World Cup, prompts delay in Edmonton

EDMONTON — Bad weather forced the players off the pitch early in Canada’s game against New Zealand at the Women’s World Cup on Thursday. The match, however, resumed some 30 minutes later.

German referee Bibiana Steinhaus halted the game in the fourth minute as thunder rumbled. The stadium announcer cited a lightning threat and asked fans to take refuge under the stands until the weather passed.

The game was tied 0-0 at the time.

Rain lashed Commonwealth Stadium immediately after the early China-Netherlands game ended, leaving the Canadians and New Zealanders to warm up in a downpour. The rain continued at kickoff.

There was a severe thunderstorm watch for the Edmonton area.
