Eight officers from the Fort St. John RCMP detachment were honoured at a ceremony in Prince George Wednesday for their work in taking drunk drivers off the road.

The officers took a combined 182 motorists off the road in 2014 for alcohol and drug offenses while driving, and were inducted as members of Alexa’s Team at a ceremony in Prince George Wednesday.

Officers are named to the team when they take a minimum of 12 impaired drivers off the road in a given year through either a criminal charge investigation or immediate roadside prohibitions.

“These are 12 impaired drivers that could have caused any kind of unknown carnage on the road,” said S. Sgt. Dale Somerville of the RCMP E Division Traffic Services who manages the program.

“It’s very hard to measure what these officers are doing, but we’re preventing these things from happening.”

Officers are named an “all star” when they’ve taken at 34 drivers off the road.

The Fort St. John officers who were inducted include:

– Cst. Gregory Jodoin (All-Star)
– Cst. Kevin Marques
– Cst. Graham McElgunn
– Cst. Nicole Campbell
– Cpl. Timothy Paulmert
– Cst. Travis Reed
– Cst. Carlee Munro
– Cst. Dylan Bergmark

The Alexa’s Team program began in 2008 after four-year-old Alexa Middelaer was killed by an impaired driver. The driver, a 56-year-old woman, was later convicted of impaired driving causing bodily harm and death.

Since then, more than 1,600 provincial police officers have been inducted to team, processing more than 66,500 sanctions for alcohol and drug related driving offences, according to the program.

“The RCMP are dedicated to continuing enforcement on our roads and making them the safest in North America,” Somerville said.

“This program is important in helping to make that happen.”

Officers from the Northern Rockies and Dawson Creek detachment were also inducted. They include Cst. Shawn Gau and Cst. Lee Simpkins from Fort Nelson for removing a combined 66 drivers from the road.

Dawson Creek inductees removed a total of 139 drivers last year. They are:

– Cst. Matthew Anderson
– Cst. Arien Flikweert
– Cst. Matthew Gould
– Cst. James Fennema
– Cst. Philip (Matthew) Ferguson
– Cst. Shaun Kennedy
– Cst. Aaron Semeniuk
