After a strong showing at the Canadian Amateur Nationals MMA tryouts Dylan Lielke, and Jamie Herrington will be going to Las Vegas in July to compete against the world’s best. Lielke and Herrington won in their respective classes at nationals to solidify their spots.

To say the opportunity in front of them is huge would be an understatement as the event is heavily attended and scouted by UFC brass.

“People don’t realize this but the UFC, Dana White and all of his head guys watched the worlds last year and now this year they are in full support of it,” Fivestar owner Justin Donally said. “It’s happening right at the UFC fan expo, right in the middle of it. The UFC officials will be there scouting so for these guys there’s nothing bigger. For Fivestar, for our athletes, for them individually, and for the City of Fort St. John I think this is huge to see this.”

Lielke began his tournament with a difficult fight against Doug Westbrook from Lethbridge. The bout went to the judges where Lielke won by a unanimous decision. In his second contest in the finals he won in the second round by TKO.

Herrington made quick work of her opponents. She won by an official’s stoppage in round one in her first bout, and followed that with another stoppage between the first and second rounds in her second scrap.

While Herrington doesn’t have a vast number of MMA bouts on her resume, it doesn’t mean that she’s not capable of battling elite talent with her years of wrestling experience and credentials.

“She is new to MMA but she’s a five time national champion level wrestler, alternate on the Canadian Olympic team,” Donally explained. “Wrestling is one of the key factors of MMA. You look in the UFC almost every champion in every weight division has a really strong national level wrestling background.”

Overall only seven amateur Canadian fighters will be attending, and two of which being Lielke, and Herrington.

Fivestar is looking to attract sponsors for the duo’s trip to Las Vegas. If anyone is interested in offering support to the team, they’re asked to get in touch with Donally at Fivestar Athletics by calling 250-785-2736, or by dropping by the gym located at 10116 94 Avenue.

The event will be held July 6-11.
