EDMONTON — Coach John Herdman says Canada enters the Women’s World Cup with a greater purpose than any other team in the tournament.

And that means Canada could go to uncharted places at the women’s soccer showcase.

The Canadian women, ranked eighth in the world, kick off the competition Saturday against No. 16 China before what is expected to be a capacity crowd at Commonwealth Stadium.

Herdman says he has ignored the ongoing FIFA corruption scandal to focus on his team’s preparations. He says he wouldn’t have known if president Sepp Blatter was abducted by aliens.
