For the second year in a row, the competitive dancers of the Northern Dance Theatre Society will be showcasing their best group dances of this year’s competitions in this evening’s gala at the North Peace Cultural Centre.
Shauna Milne, owner of Studio 2 Stage Dance Academy, where Northern Dance Theatre Society dancers train, is looking forward to tonight’s performances.
“It’s the only time we get to see our competitive dancers dance all their numbers at one time, under one roof,” Milne said.
Milne decided to put on a gala two year ago, when it became increasingly difficult to fit the competition numbers into the annual Spring Recital any longer. With approximately 300 students dancing at Studio 2 Stage this past year, she could not fit the competition numbers into the recital, even with adding a third recital time. Thus the NDTS Gala was born.
“It gives us a chance to celebrate the fact that the kids had a really great season, with many of the dances winning awards,” said Milne. “You can see it all in one night, in one room.”
In addition to the group numbers, the Gala will feature solo performances by the Society’s five graduating dancers; Brittany Lee, Kendra Coulter, Cassie Arntson, Trinity Truscott and Tennille Johnson. They will each be showcasing a different style of dance, as they have chosen to perform their favourite solos from this competition season.
The event kicks off at 6:30 pm, with cocktails and meet and greet upstairs in the North Peace Cultural Centre, with the actual performance starting at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at the Cultural Centre box office, by phone at 250-785-1992 or on-line at www.npcc.bc.ca
