Four athletes from Fivestar Athletics will be in Lethbridge May 29-31 as they’ll be competing at the Canadian Amateur Nationals MMA tryouts. Dylan Lielke, Jamie Herrington, Mikel DuPont, and Matt Kertesz will be trying to book their tickets to represent Team Canada at the MMA World Championships in Las Vegas in July.
Fivestar owner Justin Donally said each of the fighters brings something different to the table when it comes to competing.
“Dylan Lielke, our amateur featherweight champion is now the number one ranked featherweight in western Canada. He’s been training for this since before his last fight. Him and Jamie Herrington with her wrestling background, we expect big things out of her. Matt Kertesz is still pretty green but he’s 2-0 in MMA and 1-0 in kick boxing. Mikel Dupont meanwhile is 2-1 and is splitting his time between here and Kamloops. He’s a good asset for our team. He’s a purple belt in jiu jitsu and he’s been around the fight scene for quite awhile.”
The chance to potentially go to worlds in Vegas is a huge opportunity as it will provide the fighters a chance to get scouted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship as they support the event, and also have a card planned for the same time.
“This worlds is actually backed by the UFC now. The UFC has gotten behind it. For them it’s the biggest way to scout out new talent. It’s held on International Fight Week. There’s a big UFC that weekend. The winners of each weight class of this tournament will win the national title and then they’ll get an all expenses paid trip to represent Team Canada in Vegas at the worlds.”
Updates on each of the fighters progress at nationals will be provided as details become available.
