This holiday season, all of our Supporters are entered to win an $800 Shopping Spree Giveaway!

The week kicked off yesterday with City staff helping to clean up around City facilities.

The next Pitch In Week is the Community Planting Day on Tuesday, May 26, when students from Robert Ogilvie Elementary and CM Finch Elementary will be down at Centennial Park, beautifying the area and planting flowers in the gardens along 100 Street with City staff.

Although only two schools are participating in the planting day, every school in the District will be taking part in Pitch In Day on Thursday. “It’s good to see that kind of participation,” said Armstrong. “Tons of kids getting involved, especially since sometimes it’s those parks, open spaces and school grounds that have the most debris and garbage on them after the snow has melted away. So come Friday, all of those spaces will be cleaned up, and looking beautiful.”

Over 30 groups are registered to participate on Pitch In Day, said Armstrong, so there will be several thousand people out and about in the city, cleaning up.

“We always have a good turn-out for Pitch In Day,” said Armstrong. Although registration closed on May 11, she says she is still getting requests from groups wanting to help out.

To increase the amount of community engagement, the City has added a Neighbourhood Challenge to Pitch In Week this year. On Saturday, May 30 teams and individuals can take part in a 20 minute clean-up, with a chance to win prizes from the City.

“Traditionally, it’s community groups who register with us, so this new challenge gives families and people who are maybe not involved in any of these community groups to participate too,” she said. “We want everyone to take ownership of their community and make sure everything is clean and beautiful, for everyone’s enjoyment.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the Neighbourhood Challenge, can register by contacting the Community Development Coordinator at 250-787-5791 or by email Deadline for registration is noon on Friday, May 29.
