Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair praises Alberta counterpart’s ‘superb vision’

REGINA — Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is praising his Alberta counterpart for her campaign, saying that Rachel Notley has a “superb vision” for how to help people in their daily lives.

His comments come the day after Premier Jim Prentice warned party faithful at a fundraising dinner that the NDP could “undermine the heart of Alberta’s economy.”

Prentice told the crowd that Albertans don’t need a pipeline policy that resembles the one advocated by Mulcair.

Mulcair has been a polarizing figure on pipelines in Alberta, saying he opposes lines that ship raw product for refining abroad rather than trying to build upgrader jobs in Canada.

Notley has said her party would fight for pipeline approval, but would marshal limited government resources to lobby only for projects that have a realistic chance of success.

Mulcair says he’s proud of Notley’s campaign because it’s resonating well with people and her plan would make life more affordable for the middle class.

“I can only say that Rachel Notley is an extraordinary politician, she’s a very seasoned politician, she’s an extraordinary leader and she’s shown that with the type of campaign that she’s run,” he says.

Alberta voters go to the polls Tuesday.
