Election buzz rife in Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN — Speculation is swirling in Prince Edward Island that Premier Wade MacLauchlan will call an election today.

Media reports have said MacLauchlan will make a special announcement at his nomination meeting tonight in a riding north of Charlottetown.

MacLauchlan’s office had no comment Sunday on the possibility of an election call.

But a spokeswoman for the governing Liberals, Mary Lynn Kane, said today’s announcement would be of interest to all islanders.

MacLauchlan, who took over from Robert Ghiz in February, could wait until next April to go to the voters.

But he’s reportedly discussed calling a vote this spring rather than hold a byelection to seek a seat in the legislature.

The Liberals hold 20 seats in the legislature, the Tories have three and there is one Independent, three seats are vacant.
