The first of three days of Canada Winter Games speed skating at the Pomeroy Sport Centre has come and gone. The highlight of day one was Dawson Creek’s Jacob Graham winning a gold medal in the men’s 500 metre race.

“I came into the 500 metre ranked first but I woke up this morning feeling a little bit sick. I was a little bit worried I wasn’t going to be able to perform in front of the home crowd but it’s a huge relief. I feel really good about it,” he said.

Skaters took part in two heats for the event. In his first skate Graham clocked in at 37.28. He said he was capable of doing better and he did just that in his second effort at 37.00.

“The first race wasn’t that great for me I don’t think. I was definitely looking for some improvement in the second one and I was really excited about that.”
