The team didn’t lose a game all tournament and found themselves facing Dawson Creek in the finals. The Oscars started slow in the first quarter as they missed a few easy buckets, but settled in nicely the rest of the way and won the game 83-58.

After the game coach Mike Redford said there is a lot of experience on his team, and work in the off-season paid of on the court with the win

“We’ve got a good group of grade 12’s this year; a lot of experience. We went to provincials the last two years but this year I didn’t know what to expect,” he explained. We had a lot of guys that have seen that high level so they’re ready to play. They’ve been playing in the off-season and getting ready. There was a lot of effort on defence and guys came ready to play today. It was nice.”

The main thing that stood out or Redford and the rest of the senior boys was not their own play, but the Dawson Creek team. It’s one of the better squads that the school has put out in recent times.

“I’ve got to give credit to Dawson. This is one of the best years I’ve seen them play in a long time,” Redford said. “They’re absolutely competitors. They play tough on defence, they press, and they trap. We talked about taking care of the ball, making sure we capitalize when they make mistakes and starting things on defence and turning it into offence.”

Starting off the season as well as the Oscars did will be key for momentum, and later on in the season it will likely be the same Dawson Creek team that NPSS will need to beat if they want to advance once again to provincials.

“It’s big. I don’t know how the Prince George teams are right now but Dawson is the team that we’ll need to beat to get to provincials,” Redford said. “I really think that they’re going to be tough. They’re going to be there at zones and they’re going to be ready. We need our bench. You saw at the end we got into foul trouble and our big guys had to sit down. We have a couple of really tough competitors that are at provincials [volleyball] that we could have used. If we get in that position where we’re fighting till the end we’re going to need those guys come zones.”

The Oscars next tournament will be this weekend in Grande Prairie.
