Huskies respond with much improved game, but still fall short to Dawson Creek

The final outcome may not have been the desired one, but assistant coach Todd Alexander had nothing negative to say about the way his team played throughout the contest.

“The result is that we lost but we played a good 60 minute hockey game tonight. I think the boys responded,” he said. “We lost a few more bodies again tonight. That seems to be a theme of ours as well. Overall the effort was there tonight and it’s just a tough loss. They took those points away, we didn’t give any points away.”

Despite losing the aforementioned bodies, the team will be fine for tonight’s game against the Fairview Flyers as the Huskies will get two bodies back into the line-up who were out for the game in Dayne Pederson, and Jerome Thorne.

“We get a couple more veterans back in the line-up tomorrow,” Alexander said. “One of them has been injured [Pederson], he’s been out for awhile so he’ll be a veteran coming back in and add another guy that was suspended [Thorne] for one game, he’s back in the line-up too. Technically tomorrow we’ll have a little bit older of a line-up but still we’re pretty young on the bottom end and we’ve got a lot to learn but if we work that hard  every night things will come forward for us.”

One of the few noticeable changes from the last few games was the physical presence the Huskies had out on the ice. Opposing players were punished from going into the corners for pucks, and crossing across the middle of the ice.

“I think that we want to play physical every night. That’s an emphasis that we have to establish in this league,” Alexander explained. “It’s early in the year and we still have a young hockey club and I was definitely happy to see how they responded. It was a tough week for them. It wasn’t easy. They had to do a lot of work and get back to basics and they fought through it and I think they responded well tonight.”

Scoring the lone goal for the Huskies was Cayle Bell. Assists on the goal went to Kody Disher and Daylen Pearson.

Shots were 26-23 in favour of Fort St. John. Staring goaltender Travis McLean had a solid game between the pipes.

The Huskies will next play tonight at 8 p.m. at home against the Fairview Flyers as they conclude a four game home stand.
