Chief Elections Officer, Janet Prestley attributes the increase of voter retention to improved awareness, comparable to 2011, which noted 211 voters during the first day of advanced polling.
“That’s actually higher than it was for the 2011 election,” Prestley explained. “So I’m thinking that’s an increased awareness just because the 2011 election actually had candidates for mayor, as well as a referendum question.”
Prestley adds, “Is social media helping? I don’t know; I kind of think so, maybe.”
While these comparable numbers are promising, Prestley concedes that municipal elections across the province generally have low voter turnout.
“Unfortunately, municipal elections usually do have the lowest voter turnout, which still escapes me because local government is where the majority of your services – everyday services are provided.”
The next day for advanced polling is slated for November 12 at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, running 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
The official Election Day, November 15th, is also accepting ballots inside the Pomeroy Sports Centre, and again, it’s running 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
