The funding goes to a program partnership between the north region, B.C. Construction Association and the Construction Foundation of B.C. to provide training tools and equipment required by secondary schools.
It’s designed to replace and enhance current shop class equipment, coming at a time when this region continues to prepare for a major industrial development push.
That in turn will create the need for more skilled trade workers, and local area high school graduates remain an important labor source for small and medium sized construction companies.
There is a concern however that without more shop class emphasis, many of those companies will have trouble recruiting the people they need to land new contracts.
Accordingly, the trust – an independent regional economic development corporation, is getting behind Project Shop Class, with a current budget for the northern focus of $532,000.
However, the high schools involved have requested more than one million, and are therefore also moving forward with fundraising activities.
