The agency has also gone on record to say they intend to have the hulls of the Spirit of Vancouver Island and Spirit of British Columbia tailored and has already submitted an application to the B.C. Ferries commissioner.
The modifications, according to B.C. Ferries, would save an approximate $9.2 million per year over the remaining 27-year life cycle of the two vessels.
B.C. Ferries president, Mike Corrigan told The Canadian Press that LNG is 50 per cent cheaper than marine diesel and the conversions, slated separately between 2016 and 2018, also bring with it environmental benefits.
Corrigan goes on to say the corporation spent $126 million on fuel last fiscal year and that the two Spirit-class vessels, the largest diesel consumers in its convoy, devoured about 15 per cent of the total bill.
The two vessels operate on the Tsawwassen-to-Swartz Bay route, which carried 28 per cent of total passengers in the fiscal 2014 year.
