It applies to water withdrawals by the oil and gas industry, with the exception of water stored in dugouts, the main channel of 8 large rivers, and Williston and Dinosaur Lakes.

The rivers include the Peace, Pine, Sikanni Chief, Liard, Prophet, Muskwa, Dunedin, and Fort Nelson.

Responding to drought conditions, the OGC initially issued a withdrawal suspension directive on July 28th, and 11 days later, expanded it to include additional basins within the Peace River watershed.

In its second update yesterday, it noted levels of many rivers in the region are currently near or below their record low flows for this time of year.

In the past 16 week period, beginning May 1st, the Fort St. John airport weather station has unofficially posted a precipitation total of only 92 millimeters.

That’s only 40 per cent of the May – August norm of 230 millimeters.
