The month to-date total through yesterday was 29.7, and while that’s not enough to cure what’s ailing local crops, there was enough to slow down the growth of the Mount McAllister wildfire in the Hudson’s Hope area.

Still, at last word it covered about 16,000 hectares and was actually the smallest of the four major wildfires in the Peace Region, which by midday yesterday had a combined burn area of about 112,000 hectares.

At last report there were still about 150 fires burning across the province and the Wildfire Management Branch is hoping for more province-wide cooler, showery weather, with light winds and no lightning as it tries to get a handle on them.

The fires now extend across both the borders with Alberta and Washington where major suppression efforts are also underway
