Cranston says her time in France was an education in a number of ways and she now feels more comfortable with her game on the court.
“I think in the past year I’ve really learned a lot about myself both as a person and a player,” she explains. “Being in the pro scene you have to coach yourself a lot and it’s helped me to really analyze what I’m doing and fix it on my own. I just feel a lot more aware of my game.”
Her time in France was good for her overall she was but does admit spending a season overseas did have its difficult moments.
“France was good and I’m very thankful for it. It was cool to live in a new country, learn a new language, and cultural customs,” Cranston says. “That being said it was a very testing year. It pushed me as a person and as a player more than I ever thought but I know God had me there for a reason and I’m very grateful for that.”
Closer to home Cranston and her Team Canada teammates are coming off of a big win at the NORECA Women’s World Championship Qualification. The victory booked the team’s ticket to Italy at the end of September to play in the 2014 FIVB World Championships.
Cranston says winning the tournament was the team’s number one goal this season and the group already has their sights on the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
“Our biggest goal of the summer came first. We wanted to qualify for world championships in Italy and we did in Toronto so it’s nice to have that under our belt,” she explains. “Now the summer is about getting better as a group and individually. At the end of July we start world Grand Prix which is really exciting for us, then we will have the world championships September October. Personally I want to continue to serve this team in whatever way I can. I want to play my role and continue to improve my skill. The only way we are going to make Rio in two years is if we are continually pushing to make each other better and that’s what I want to do.”
Next for Cranston and Team Canada volleyball is taking part in the 2014 Women’s Pan-American Volleyball Cup from June 10-21.
