“Dr. Mackey is a committed GP, a pioneer in his profession, and a dedicated mentor,” said Dr. Richard Moody, North Peace Division of Family Practice, Chair. “He has made significant and lasting contributions to patient health care in Fort St. John and deserves to be acknowledged for all he has done for our community and the North Peace Division.”
“The BCCFP has over 4,000 family physician members and annually recognizes outstanding family physicians from across the province in several categories that include Rural Family Physician, Community Family Physician, Teacher, Researcher and Excellence in Contribution. Dr. Mackey is an outstanding rural family doctor who practices in Fort St John,” said Dr. Lisa Gaede, Past-President and Awards Committee Chair.
Dr. Mackey has been practicing family medicine in Fort St. John since 1995. He is also a GP anesthetist, obstetrician and until recently provided ER coverage in addition to running a busy family practice office. He was a provincial leader in patient self-management and the first GP in Fort St. John to hold a Group Medical Appointment.
As Site Director for the Peace Liard Family Medicine Residency Program since its inception in 2008, he has been instrumental in training and recruiting rural doctors. It is to his credit that some residents have chosen to remain in the community.
Dr. Mackey is also known for his professional leadership to his peers. He has served on the Rural Issues Committee of the Doctors of BC for 14 years and was instrumental in guiding his colleagues towards the installation of an office Electronic Medical Records system.
A father of four, Dr. Mackey is also an active community member. He is involved in local choral groups, soccer, bands, and the Stage North theatre group.
