Huskies double up Wolves to take lead in series

Slave Lake opened the scoring and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes but Fort St. John tied the game just over six minutes into the second. The Wolves would again re-take the lead off of a deflected shot, but a bad giveaway but Wolves goaltender Justin Olansky late in the second resulted in the tying goal at 2-2.

Heading into the third two goals in two minutes to take a 4-2 lead. Slave Lake attempted to battle back with a power play goal, but the Huskies restored the two goal lead and eventually added an empty netter to take the 6-3 win.

Head Coach Gary Alexander gave credit to the Wolves who played a much better hockey game than what the Huskies saw from them in the regular season.

“Good on the Wolves, they came here to play. They played us right down to the wire. We had to stick with our game. They put a lot better effort in than they have all winter against us, not that they haven’t put some decent efforts in. It was a pretty good hockey game all in all.”

Alexander says it took a little while for the Huskies to get going but they got things going in the second period.

“The wolves came out to play. They forechecked us hard and they clogged up the middle. We didn’t get to the outside like our gameplan. We didn’t click for a period and a half. I thought half way through the second we started to come around a little bit. We stopped taking penalties and that cost us a little bit.”

Goals for the Huskies were scored by Jordan Gies, Daylen Pearson, Blair Karasiuk, Lien Miller-Jeannotte, Blair Karasiuk, and Brighton Campbell.

Game two of the series goes this afternoon at the North Peace Arena at 1:30 p.m.
