Senior Flyers win home opener 10-5

Assistant Captain Mike Shipton says the team didn’t have the best start but got things together when it mattered the most and got two big shorthanded goals in the process.

“Everything went good. The first period was a little bit sloppy but I think after the first two periods we started playing better and the third we kind of ran away with it,” he explains. “The shorthanded goals by Cleaver two in a row there on one penalty really helped us out. That guy’s got amazing speed. He kind of led the way with scoring and got us ahead.”

Having a full complement of players definitely helped this time around, as Shipton says the team didn’t have its usual roster for the season opener last weekend in Grande Prairie.

“We had a full line-up tonight. In Grande Prairie we were missing quite a few guys and our starting goalie. Tonight just a full roster and everybody played hard.” he says.

Scoring for the Flyers were Bryan Lewis, Matt Shuya, Bryce Novak, Rick Cleaver, Matt Shuya, Jeff Fast, Rick Cleaver, Rick Cleaver, Robbie Sidhu, and Mike Shipton.

The shots on goal at the end of the night favoured Fort St. John 42-32, while Dillon Maier made 27 saves for the win.

The Flyers next take to the ice on Friday for a rematch in Dawson Creek against the Canucks, while the next home game at the North Peace Arena will be on Saturday against Lakeland at 8:30 p.m.
