Red Kettle Campaign kicks off in Fort St. John with announcement of new shelter grand opening

Red kettles are now set up in several locations around the city, including Walmart, PriceSmart, Sobeys, Canadian Tire and Safeway.

This year the Salvation Army has an ambitious goal of raising $200,000, which will go towards the operation of its shelter, its community lunch program, the food bank, and Christmas hampers. Applications for this year’s hampers are being accepted as of yesterday, with 30 received on the first day. It’s expected the Sally Anne will serve dinner to and provide toys for 200 families this holiday season.

While the kettles are in place, there is still a vast shortage of people to man them. Anyone interested in volunteering can call the Salvation Army at 250-785-0506 or Captain Jim VanderHeyden at 250-329-4728.

As for the Light of the North, the finishes touches are being put on the renovation to the Cedar Lodge Motor Inn. The project is expected to top out at $4.4 million, with $1.4 raised by the local Salvation Army, and the rest coming from the provincial government.

Once completed, there will be ten more beds for the city’s homeless, as well as another 34 for transitional housing.
