City defers change in Wastewater Transfer Station hours to November

With stricter federal wastewater system effluent regulations coming into play in January 2015, the City recently decided to close the station as of December 31, 2014, and reduce its hours to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday starting October 1, 2013 until the closure. In the past few years it’s had issues with disallowed types of waste being brought in that hurt the system, and whatever is brought in becomes the City’s responsibility.

Council and City staff met with sewage haulers, rural residents, and representatives of the Peace River Regional District on Tuesday, October 24, where suggestions were made to try and avoid a back up in sewer service. Among them were having the station open 12 hours a day 6 days a week, implementing a stricter screening process for access, and charging more per cubic metre to cover the cost of monitoring the station.

A staff report will come to council at its October 15 meeting.
