Man convicted of selling illegally caught fish in Dawson Creek

Steer was the fishing master of a vessel out of Gibsons, B.C. that harvests tuna in American waters and sablefish in Canadian waters. The owners of the boat became suspicious when he returned with less tuna than expected on three occasions.

Evidence showed that Steer was using the alias of “John Renton” to transport a large shipment of illegally caught frozen sablefish and halibut fillets from Vancouver Island to Dawson Creek. He reportedly caught large quantities of sablefish “under the cover of darkness and without validation”, as well as halibut, which he was not instructed to fish for.

The dates of his offences ranged from July to December 2010. He’s set to be sentenced on July 29.
