Troy Knight is the General Manager at the golf course. He explains young golfers from around the region take part in the fun competition.
“We have juniors from all over the Peace country come in and play 18 holes of golf. There’s some competitiveness, but we try to base it on a lot of having fun,” Knight explains. “We’re also a stop on the Peace Country Junior Tour this year, which originated in Grande Prairie, which is another measure to get the kids involved in the sport.”
Knight says that there will be a wide age group taking part in Thursday’s tournament, with some golfers under the age of 10.
“We have quite the spectrum of ages. I’m going to say there’s kids starting at the seven or eight year old mark,” he says. “It is an 18 hole round of competition, so they have to be able to keep up with the pace of play, so as long as they are comfortable with it, we are comfortable with it. If they want to play, we want to have them come and play.”
Knight also thanks the community for contributing to not only the Junior Open, but junior golf programs.
“Just being in Fort St. John and the Peace country, we’re blessed with huge support from companies, and the Fort St. John Petroleum Association gives us some money yearly for our junior programs.”
Thursday’s tournament tees off at 10 a.m.
