Next steps for Dawson Creek after Bernier elected MLA

Should he choose to no longer be mayor, he must first hand in his resignation, which is expected to happen within a few days as Bernier has previously indicate he would step down if elected. At the following city council meeting, council would then set a date for a byelection and choose a Chief Electoral Officer.

Sitting city councillors must first decide if they would like to run to replace Bernier, and in doing so, they give up their seat on council. If any choose to put their name in, the byelection would also include that number of councillor positions as well.

The next Dawson Creek city council meeting is set for May 27, 2013, and it’s expected the matter of a byelection will be up for discussion then. It would be the fourth byelection in the Peace Region since the November 2011 municipal election, after resignations in Chetwynd, Hudson’s Hope and Tumbler Ridge.
