Fort St. John’s own Stewart claims Fivestar Middleweight Championship

Stewart stepped into the octagon against Matt “The Riotmaker” Baker of Kamloops with the title on the line. Stewart came away with a submission victory over Baker at 3:20 of the thirrd round. Aside from winning the title, Stewart also avenged a previous loss to Baker back in 2010.

The main event of the evening saw Ryan “Vanilla Gorilla” Fortin of Wetaskiwin battle Craig Hudson from Paris, Ontario for the Fivestar Heavyweight Championship. Both competitors were extremely tired entering the fourth round and it was Hudson who came away with the TKO victory at 2:30 of the fourth round as Fortin dropped.

Shawn Albrecht of Maple Ridge and Travis Matthews from Prince George stepped into the octagon to battle for the Fivestar Featherweight Championship. Albrecht came away the winner at 4:17 of the 2nd round by way of TKO due to strikes.

The Fivestar Featherweight Championship was the final title contested that night. Saskatoon’s Eric Wilson defeated Sean Quinn from Regina by TKO at the 3:50 mark of the 3rd round, after a ref stoppage because of a foot injury sustained by Quinn during the fight.

There were three more fights in the professional MMA portion of the card. Calgary’s Nick Campbell defeated Jonathan Dubois of Vancouver by TKO with ten seconds left in the second round. Duncan Wilson of Fort St. John beat Prince George’s Aaron Barnard by submission, using the Americana at the 4:20 mark of round one, and Spencer Jebb from Grande Prairie beat Ayrin Avey of Dawson Creek by TKO as that bout was stopped 52 seconds into round one.

On the amateur card, Cory Antrim of Prince George beat Grande Prairie’s Bob Dury by TKO in the first round. Mathew Gador of Prince George defeated Christopher Hardy from Kamloops by TKO in the fight’s opening round, and Jennifer Strumborg of Peace River defeated Jessyca Holland of Dawson Creek, who was making her MMA debut, by split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29). 

Fort St. John’s Shad Potts made Derek Apps of Kamloops submit by armbar in round two, William Quintal from Grande Prairie beat Peace River’s Tyler Lushman by TKO in round one, and Paul Alec of Prince George also won by TKO in round one as he beat Alex Martinez from Grande Prairie.
