Dawson Creek byelection set for September 14

Gintner’s position will be effective June 26, as she says council wanted to delay the election date until after the summer.

Former Dawson Creek Mayor Mike Bernier resigned from his position effective last Friday, stepping down after being elected MLA for Peace River South on May 14. Starting June 26, current city councillors will have two weeks to declare whether they would like to run to replace him, and in doing so, give up their seat on council. If so, they can choose to resign immediately, or stay on until voting day.

After that, a notice of nomination will be advertised, and the nomination period for any residents wishing to run for either mayor or any potentially open councillor position will begin on July 30 and run for 10 days. If there’s more than one person running for any position, an election will be held on September 14, 2013.

Voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Encana Events Centre, and advance polls will be available on September 4 and 11 at City Hall. In the meantime, councillors will continue with their acting mayor rotation.
